Eligibility for Transportation

Administrative Regulation 3541, provides that students residing beyond prescribed distances from their school of attendance will be eligible for transportation. For the purpose of determining eligibility, the “shortest walking distance” to the school of attendance shall be applied as follows:

Kindergarten Students

Who live one (1) mile or more from the nearest vehicle or pedestrian entrance to the school yard of the assigned elementary school.

Elementary School Students - Grades 1 - 5

Who live one and one-half (1½) miles or more from the nearest vehicle or pedestrian entrance to the school yard of the assigned elementary school.

Middle School Students - Grades 6 - 8

Who live two (2) miles or more from the nearest vehicle or pedestrian entrance to the school yard of the assigned middle school.

Senior High School Students - Grades 9 - 12

Who live three and one-half (3½) miles or more from the nearest vehicle or pedestrian entrance to the school yard of the assigned high school.

Note: The “shortest walking distance” is calculated from the nearest entrance to the street of the student’s residence to the nearest entrance at the school site.

Bus Passes

At the beginning of each school year, bus passes are printed and distributed to all secondary bus students. During the remainder of the school year, replacement passes and passes for new students are issued from the School or the Transportation Department at the request of the school. All secondary students will present their bus pass to the driver prior to boarding the bus for each trip (a.m. and p.m.). A temporary pass from the school is also an acceptable substitute and will be issued for a period not exceeding two weeks.
